Why the Karakoram Highway Matters
The Karakoram Highway is the main road link between Gilgit-Baltistan and the rest of Pakistan. It runs through Diamer district, including the Chilas area, and continues north toward the Khunjerab Pass on the border with China. Passenger buses, cargo vehicles and tourists use the route, along with residents travelling between the region’s districts and the rest of the country.
Because the highway carries so much traffic through a narrow mountain corridor, any attack on it draws immediate attention from authorities. It also leaves security forces with a long stretch of road to watch, which is why patrols and checkposts operate along the route.
Chilas has seen earlier attacks on security personnel. In August 2025, two GB Scouts personnel were killed and another injured when unidentified gunmen fired on a joint check post in Chilas’ Hudur area. In April 2026, an ambush on a police team returning from an anti-poppy operation near Chilas left at least three personnel dead and five wounded, according to Dawn.
